DIY Melted Crayon Stained Glass Art
In the past, we created melted crayon stained glass and cut the art into hearts. However, this time we left the project open-ended, and the results were amazing! Our kids not only carefully arranged the crayon shavings between wax paper to create their desired look, but they also added marker drawings over the stained glass sheets to complete their artwork.
Here are the materials you’ll need:
- Crayons
- Cheese grater or pencil sharpener
- Wax paper
- Iron
- Sharpie markers
Here are the instructions:
- Gather crayons. Chunky toddler crayons are great because they are quicker and easier to grate, but regular crayons will work fine as well.
- Grate the crayons on a cheese grater or use a pencil sharpener to make crayon shavings. Be careful with your fingers! Keep the crayon shavings separated by color in individual dishes or the sections of a muffin tin.
- Cut or tear a sheet of wax paper and fold it in half to crease the center. Add crayon shavings to one side of the wax paper in any pattern or design desired. Fold the second half of the wax paper back over to sandwich in the crayon shavings.
- Melt the crayon shavings by placing the wax paper/crayon shaving sandwich on a piece of newsprint or other paper on your ironing board or surface. Place another piece of paper on top to soak the oils from the melting crayon. Run the iron over the paper/wax paper/crayon shaving sandwich slowly and evenly to melt the crayon. Lift the top paper off to reveal your new melted crayon-stained glass.
- Optional: Use Sharpie markers to add details or images to your stained glass.
- Display your artwork on a window by tapping it directly on the glass, or create proper frames with construction paper or masking tape.
